Flow drill the fastener for thin-walled material

When using thin-walled material, you have limited options available for creating a threaded connection. When using a blind rivet nut or weld nut, the reliability of the connection affects the chance of a reject part or rework. Flow drill is the solution by creating a reliable connection in the parent material that is suitable for tapping.

Flow drill more cost-effective than threaded inserts

With a Flow drill you can produce up to ten thousand connections with one tool, this results in cost savings of 85% compared to threaded inserts. With using one tool for all the connections, it will also reduce your inventory, resulting in smooth stock keeping and purchasing. The connection is formed using the parent material, so there is no need to introduce any additional fixings. As the connection forms from the same material, environmental conditions such as heat and cold do not affect the stability and there is less chance of connection working loose as can occur with dissimilar metals. In many industries, loose fixings such as threaded inserts can be of concern as the connection as an insert can, on occasion work loose and result in rework.

Many connections with one tool

Friction drilling can work in most malleable materials, as a rule of thumb if you can bend it you can drill it. When using the standard tool and our Flowtaps, the advantages over rivet nuts are many. Friction drilling can produce all standard threads from M2 to M20 and in material thicknesses from 1.0mm to 10mm steel. In some cases, a Flowdrill hole can replace a blind rivet nut by simply providing adequate material to use a self-tapping or thread forming screw to reduce manufacturing costs further. With Flowdrill two styles of hole finish are available, the standard which provides a small collar upstand replicating that of certain blind rivet nuts or the flat giving the user a flush finish on the workpiece.
