Flowdrill Meets EUROCODE 3 Standards

The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) has incorporated Flowdrill into its EUROCODE 3 manual.

Why you should choose Friction Drilling over using an expansion or hollow bolt?

In the construction industry, structures were traditionally built on-site, using expansion bolts to create strong connections to hollow sections.. However, with the growth of modular construction and increased factory work, Friction Drilling allows you to use only the parent material to create reliable connections. This approach offers several benefits including:
  • No need for on-site work, reducing the risk of errors;
  • Faster installation time;
  • Lower cost per connection.

What is Friction Drilling?

Friction drilling, also known as thermal drilling, or Flowdrilling, is a heat-based drilling technique that makes a hole without removing material, like traditional drilling. After forming the friction drilled hole, a thread-forming tap to create threads, making it ready for a standard fully threaded bolt. Read here more about Friction Drilling.

DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS AND GUIDELINES FROM EUROCODE 3

The Steel Construction Institute (SCI) has incorporated Flowdrill into its EUROCODE 3 manual, where it underwent testing in 5-12.5mm S275 and S355 mild steel for various bolt sizes. Including:
  • M16
  • M20
  • M24
The accreditation presented includes both the normal tension resistance and the structural integrity tension resistance of Flowdrill connections.
The comprehensive SCI EUROCODE 3 report outlines procedures for designing joints in steel-framed structures in compliance with BS EN 1993-1-8 and BS EN 1993-1-1 standards.
Specifically, it details connections between UK beams and hot-finished structural hollow section columns using the Flowdrill and Hollo-Bolt systems.

SIMPLIFY YOUR THREADED CONSTRUCTION METHODS BY ELIMINATING WELDING AND EXPANSION BOLTS.

With friction drilling, you not only have the possibility to avoid the strict requirements for weld approvals by contractors and in-house, but you can also keep the construction method as simple as possible. Moreover, this method allows you to keep the production process controlled and eliminates the need for on-site installation with expansion bolts.
